Mycotoxin Content of Fungi-Contaminated Sorghum Sold in Selected Markets in Ibadan, Nigeria

Aim: This study sought to evaluate the mycoflora associated with sorghum retailed in some selected markets Ibadan metropolis and assessing risks their consumption.
 Methodology: Sorghum samples were obtained from Sango, Oja Oba, Ojoo, Bodija Orita Ibadan, Nigeria. Associated fungi isolated by direct plating of sample on Potato Dextrose Agar while they identified morphological microscopic methods. Proximate aflatoxin content determined using standard 
 Results: The presence Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Mucor sp, Penicillium Trichothecium Curvularia sp., Fusarium monoliforme, Alternaria alternata, P. roqueforti observed samples. Among these, flavus niger most predominant occurrence 34.92% 23.81% respectively. analysis showed a concentration ranging 46 – 102ppb was highest collected Ojoo market. Aflatoxin contamination not detected sixty percent Oba had contaminated aflatoxins.
 Conclusion: confirmed major Ibadan. suggests need for continuous surveillance recommendation measures that will prevent fungal infestation.
